Driving in Corsham: Got any recommendations about how to handle driving in icy weather?
“Always check your car systems before you leave,” advised Kevin Jones from Mongoose Driving School. “Remember the twenty second rule becomes the ten second rule in snow and ice. Black ice can’t be seen and it could be in any condition even if the temperature has come above freezing. Never accelerate through a corner, always do your breaking in a straight line. Never coast in the snow and ice; that will make it harder to control. Don’t rely on ABS. It still works in snow and ice but takes a longer time for the car to stop.”
Mr Jones added: “Pull away in second gear in the snow, that way you get more traction. If you do get stuck in the snow you can release the air from your tires to get more grip.” Only a small amount was advised, just to help you get on your way.
Pickwick Motor Works is one of the local garages in the area which has gained the best reviews in Corsham town. One user of the site added her review: “Very helpful and totally helped me out when I had a wing mirror taken off and was a bit shaken up.”
Autobits on the High Street also sells a number of parts for your car and is worth a look for advice or extra bits and bobs to spruce up your vehicle. Box Hill Motors Ltd is another place to help you keep your car up to speed. Tell us about your favourite local garage or where you would suggest in the comment box below.
Remember, if the weather takes a nasty turn, it might be a good idea to take with you a warm jacket, a flask of a warm drink, some walking shoes, a shovel, a torch and always make sure your mobile phone fully charged before you go on an outing.
