Sugden Found “Not Guilty” of Donovan Murder

Martin Sugden walked free from court today after being found “not guilty” of the murder of Corsham Rugby Player, Donovan Van Lill. 

Forty-two-year old Martin David Sugden from Stanton St Quinton appeared at Bristol Crown Court where the jury allegedly took over twelve hours to reach their verdict. 

Speaking at court following the verdict Detective Chief Superintendent Kier Pritchard and Lynne Henderson, Crown Advocate said: “Today, the jury have decided that based on the evidence they were presented, they did not have grounds to find Martin Sugden guilty of the murder of Donovan Van Lill.”

Donovan Van Lill went missing on 3rd March 2010. Missing persons enquiries began after friends and colleagues became concerned when he failed to show up for work and had made no contact with anyone. 

“Our first thoughts are with Donovan’s family and friends who we will continue to offer support as they come to terms with the impact of today’s verdict,” continued the Detective Chief Superintendent.

“Wiltshire Police and the Crown Prosecution Service worked in close partnership from the outset and conducted a thorough, professional and robust investigation which presented all available evidence to the court. The Crown Prosecution Service reviewed all the investigative material and were satisfied that there was sufficient evidence to charge Martin Sugden and that he should stand trial. However, we respect the court’s decision.”
