The recent mini heatwave has been a welcome treat for many people after a spell of unseasonably wet and cool weather. Lots of us will be hoping that we continue to enjoy warm and sunny days while the Olympics are underway and in the days that follow the Games.

But it is important to remember that long, hot summer days can lead some people to lower their guard.

Every year at this time, there will be burglars ready to exploit any weaknesses in our personal security.

For example, people can fall victim to "walk in" burglaries where a thief takes advantage of an open door to slip inside a property and snatch valuables.

So please ensure that, when you go out, all doors and windows are locked tight and, even when you are indoors or in the garden, opportunities are not provided for burglars.

Even a small casement window left open can present a thief with a quick and simple way into a house.

Please don't be tempted to leave anything unlatched, even during a short absence from the home. It may mean that the house gets stuffy and hot, but that is better than coming home to find you are a victim of burglary.

So just take a few minutes to think security. Use your locks, close your windows and don't let a criminal ruin your summer.

And remember you can register your property free of charge via www.immobilise.com
