A Corsham woman has been told she will have to pay back thousands of pounds in overpaid benefits she falsely claimed.

Susan Winter, 59, claimed £16,256.14 of housing benefit, council tax benefit and income support between November 2006 and April 2011.

The woman failed to report her employment as a waitress to the council and continued to claim benefits between November 2006 and February 2007.

During September 2007 Susan Winter became employed then began claiming income support after she became unable to work in April 2008.

The falsely claimed benefits were uncovered by a joint investigation between Wiltshire Council and the Department for Work and Pensions.

After a number of other false claims and failing to attend appointments with investigators, evidence from wage slips confirmed Susan Winter had been in employment.

She was sentenced to sixteen weeks in custody, suspended for two years and twelve months supervision order from North West Wiltshire Magistrates Court.

To report possible benefit fraud call Wiltshire Council's confidential hotline on: 01249 706256.
